Citation and Credits in Storymaps

Several storymap tools provide an interactive, multimedia format to tell stories and convey research. However, existing tutorials don’t always emphasize how to incorporate scholarly citations and media credits into these narrative projects. I developed a guide to Citing Sources in a Storymap during Spring 2022 for my students in HST 482: Byzantine Trade and Travel.

For best results, click Citing Sources in a Storymap to open the interactive guide in a new tab. You can also click the image below to open the guide, or see a static PDF of the guide here.

The projects in the class collection were made using Esri’s ArcGIS Storymaps tool, with thanks to Amanda Tickner for facilitating MSU institutional licenses. Jennifer Andrella introduced the project with a workshop on spatial history, and you can find her excellent ArcGIS Storymaps Guide (using the free version of Storymaps) on her website. For more information on reusing media, see LEADR’s Reusing and Attribuing Media guide and the Library of Congress guide, Citing Digitized Primary Sources.
